Sam Kinsley is a Halifax based artist, she studied at NSCAD University. Kinsley is an interdisciplinary artist she working in Performance, Drawing and Installation, Printmaking, and Ceramics through these mediums she investigates the power and authority of portraiture.
At Imago I will be working on a new body of work called, Impressions. Impressions is a self-portrait series using my physical identifiers to create systems of portraiture. Using traditional printmaking tools, and aspects of my physicality to create parameters I will attempt to create portraits that depict my value, in abstract and absurd ways.
In my practice I seek ways to portray myself, using methods commonly used to describe me. I use self portraiture as a means to better understand the society and economy I participate in. I create systems, to graph or accumulate data, these systems are often as arbitrary, redundant or inefficient as the systems I am faced with in my day to day life. Over the past three years I have explored self-portraiture through significant numbers in my life. I have used these numbers as starting points to investigate the power, authority and identity.
